Linda
Chapman |
Linda
Chapman, Textile Artist
Linda Chapman is a
fiber artist born in Covington, KY. Much of her work was devoted
to simply following the pattern—the practical until 1997
when she took part in a “quilting bee”. Since that
day she began seeing that her work is truly art—embracing
the vision and spirit of an artist. Linda’s quilts have
been exhibited at Grailville, The Nordheim Gallery, The Arts Consortium,
the Urban League and YMCA of Cincinnati. Her goal is to further
the historical significance of quilting, particularly for and
to the African American.

Kathryne
Gardette |
Kathryne
Gardette , Fiber Artist
Kathryne learned to
put needle to canvas from her grandmother, who learned it from
her mother, who learned it from her mother. Items made, designed
from ones imagination many times for a utilitarian purpose: an
eyeglass case, a pillowcase, a table cover. For generations the
women in her family have tenaciously created items of beauty with
their heart and hands.
Kathryne fuses folk art traditions from Ghana and America creating
a unique cultural expression. Her designs incorporate adinkras,
the Ghanaian philosophical writing symbols representing the philosophy
and vision of everyday life. Inspired to find “the”
symbol or symbols to represent a story heard, a site seen and/or
an emotion felt the symbols(s) selected are executed intuitively
in traditional crafts: appliqué, needlepoint, embroidery,
needle-weaving, punch needle and/or traditional hooking.
She enjoys working with natural fibers of silk, linen, cotton
and wool. As her hands manipulate fiber, her mind knows women
have been doing the same crafts for centuries. Her tenacity of
continuing these traditions connects her to the ancestors and
to the future

Cynthia
Lockhart , Professor, Mixed Media Artist & Quilter
Cynthia Lockhart is
internationally recognized for her fiber art work centered on
sculptural quilts. Most recently, one of her quilts was selected
to adorn the cover of the just-released book "Uncommon Threads
- Ohio's Art Quilt Revolution," and Lockhart is also featured
in the book now to be found in stores nationwide. Previously,
Lockhart's textile pieces have exhibited in museums throughout
Cincinnati and as far away as Seoul, South Korea, and have even
shown on national television.
These quilts are no
lightweight undertaking nor are they to be taken lightly. Lockhart
describes them as 3-D sculptures in fabric. Beneath the surface
of any one quilt is likely to be found leather, upholstery or
other padding to underpin a carefully constructed surface design.
"Quite frankly, the works are difficult to roll up,"
states Lockhart, adding, "I'm not necessarily using traditional
materials. These are works to be molded and sculpted."
